The Armed Police Force (APF) of Nepal has taken five foreign nationals into custody in Kathmandu for allegedly living in the country illegally. A joint team of the APF Intelligence Bureau and the force's No. 18 Battalion took them into custody on Monday evening (November 2), according to news reports.
Those taken into custody are four Bangladeshi citizens, Mohammad Kurwan Ali, Jahingir Alam, Ronit Roy Chowdhury and Akam Abdullah, and Rafat Miha, a Brazilian citizen of Bangladeshi origin. According to APF Deputy Spokesperson and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Shailendra Thapa, they were handed over to the Department of Immigration for necessary action. The reports say this is for further investigation and the necessary legal process.
The reports say a search of the room where Ronit Roy Chowdhury was living turned up 14 passports belonging to nine Bangladeshi citizens, along with two diaries that note a large number of financial transactions.
The reports also say a case against Jahingir Alam is pending at the Kathmandu District Court, where he is charged with kidnapping a Bangladeshi citizen and holding the person hostage. He has been attending hearings in the case since Chaitra 13, 2080 (March 26, 2024).
