Foreign employment department gives people with arrest warrants 35 days to come forward
The Department of Foreign Employment has asked people with outstanding arrest warrants in foreign employment cases to contact it or Nepal Police within 35 days, or face action including frozen bank accounts and blocked travel permits.
The Department of Foreign Employment has issued a public notice asking people against whom arrest warrants have been issued in foreign employment cases, and who have not yet come forward, to contact the department or Nepal Police within 35 days of the notice's publication, according to Onlinekhabar, Deshsanchar, Setopati and Nepal Views.
The warrants were issued on various dates with the permission of the Foreign Employment Tribunal, the notice says. The department said it wants those named in the warrants to take part in the legal process.
What happens after 35 days
According to the department, people with warrants who remain absconding after the deadline will face action under the Foreign Employment Act, 2064 and other laws in force. That action includes freezing their bank accounts and blocking their travel permits, the department said.
Why the department acted
The department said false promises made in the name of foreign employment, unauthorised fee collection, fake demand letters and contract irregularities cause financial and social harm to workers and their families, Deshsanchar reported. Controlling such activity needs quick handling of complaints, coordination between agencies, public awareness and action under the law, the department said.
Several outlets, including Nepal News and Himal Press, reported that the notice is aimed at bringing justice to people cheated in foreign employment cases.
