Nepal and India prepare for Janakpur-Ayodhya rail link
Nepal and India are finalizing plans for a special train service linking Janakpurdham and Ayodhya, expected to launch during Prime Minister Balen Shah's visit.
Preparations are in the final stages to launch a special train service connecting Janakpurdham in Nepal with Ayodhya in India, according to the Nepal Railway Company. The service is expected to be inaugurated jointly by the prime ministers of both nations during Prime Minister Balen Shah’s upcoming visit to India, which is expected to begin on November 22.
Paribesh Parajuli, managing director of the Nepal Railway Company, confirmed that discussions regarding the operational framework are currently underway. These talks involve railway operators, customs authorities, and security officials from both countries. While a specific date for the inauguration has not been finalized, the project is being aligned with the Prime Minister's official visit.
Strengthening the Ramayana Circuit
The proposed rail link is designed to bolster the existing Ramayana Circuit, a pilgrimage route connecting sites associated with the life of Lord Ram. By providing a direct connection between Janakpurdham, regarded as the birthplace of Sita, and Ayodhya, the service aims to facilitate easier travel for pilgrims and religious tourists.
Jitendra Mahaseth, former president of the Janakpurdham Chamber of Commerce and Industry, noted that the rail connection is expected to enhance religious and cultural ties between Nepal and India. Beyond its spiritual significance, local stakeholders anticipate that the service will stimulate economic activity and promote tourism in the region.
Security and Logistics
To ensure the safety of passengers and infrastructure, officials have reached an in-principle agreement regarding security responsibilities. According to the Nepal Railway Company, Nepali security agencies will oversee the section of the route within Nepal, while Indian authorities will manage security on the Indian side of the border.
This announcement follows a recent joint inspection of the Jayanagar–Janakpurdham–Kurtha railway line. A team comprising railway, security, customs, and immigration officials from both nations conducted an on-site assessment using a special inspection train to evaluate the readiness of the infrastructure.
Currently, regular rail services already operate between Jayanagar, India, and Bijalpura in Mahottari district, passing through Janakpurdham. The new special service would extend that link to Ayodhya, with pilgrims and religious tourists in mind.
