The Madhesh provincial government of Chief Minister Krishna Prasad Yadav (Nepali Congress) lost its majority when the CPN (UML) left the governing coalition in mid-October 2026; Ratopati dates the exit to October 16, while Nagarik News and Himal Press give October 11. The UML says the government did not implement a 15-point understanding reached on May 26, 2026, covering the budget, consumer committees, cabinet size and staff transfers. Yadav and Industry Minister Kanis Patel of the Nepali Communist Party, which still backs the government, say most points have been implemented or are under way.
According to Ratopati, Yadav must win a vote of confidence by November 15, 2026, and needs 54 votes in the 107-member assembly. The UML, the Janata Samajbadi Party and the Janmat Party have begun talks on an alternative government but have not agreed on who would lead it.
