North Korea fired about 10 short-range ballistic missiles into the sea from an area around the eastern coastal town of Wonsan on Thursday, October 29, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. South Korea's military stepped up surveillance and is sharing information with the United States and Japan; Japan's Defence Ministry said what may have been a ballistic missile fell outside its exclusive economic zone.
The launches came days after Pyongyang warned it would resume border propaganda broadcasts and deploy new weapons, and amid a row over a landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone on September 21 that injured three South Korean soldiers. Seoul blames North Korea for the blast; Pyongyang rejects the blame. South Korea has proposed military talks, which the North has not accepted. The launches also followed Kim Jong Un's surprise visit to China, the North's main ally, last weekend.
