A protest against the inauguration of a newly built 15-bed hospital in Feta Rural Municipality-3, Bara, turned into a clash on Saturday, and a youth was seriously injured by a bullet. Locals opposed to the rural municipality chair, Rustam Ansari, said the hospital should not open before it was finished and staffed; Onlinekhabar and Nagarik reported that protesters damaged its commemorative plaque. Reports give the youth's age as 18 (Nagarik), 14 (Annapurna Post) or 17 (the Chief District Officer, via Nepal Press); he is being treated in Birgunj.
Madhesh police said officers fired into the air after stones were thrown and that it had not been established whose bullet hit the youth; Nagarik and Annapurna Post reported that it was police gunfire. Locals then set motorcycles on fire, nine or ten by the outlets' counts and about a dozen vehicles according to Chief District Officer Khadananda Adhikari, who told Nepal Press on Saturday that the administration was preparing a curfew and deploying more security personnel.
