Bhotekoshi-Trishuli Flood Victims Await Relief as Toll Exceeds 7,500 Missing and Dead

Survivors of the catastrophic Bhotekoshi-Trishuli floods across central Nepal remain in limbo as official relief packages stall over administrative hurdles, even as search teams continue to recover bodies from the devastated corridor.
According to data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported by BBC News Nepali, search teams have retrieved 1,403 bodies and recorded 6,150 people missing across Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan. The flood destroyed or buried 7,570 private homes, with Nuwakot’s Vidur Municipality alone suffering damage to 3,026 properties. An early government estimate assessed the reconstruction bill at more than Rs 700 billion.
Bureaucratic Deadlock Over Missing Victims
Despite the devastation, civilian families have yet to receive formal condolence payments. Under the government's 2024 disaster-sensitive relief standards, authorities provide Rs 200,000 to the family of each deceased individual, with Rs 100,000 for each additional death in the same household. However, those standards apply only to confirmed deaths, leaving families of over 6,000 missing people without statutory compensation.
NDRRMA Chief Dharmaraj Upreti told BBC News Nepali that the agency is waiting for the cabinet to formally decide whether to treat the missing on par with the deceased. Upreti noted that while temporary shelter assistance of Rs 50,000 and monthly rental support of Rs 15,000 have begun rolling out, adjusting the baseline Rs 200,000 death payout may require legislative changes.
Former Finance Secretary Yubaraj Bhusal argued that the cabinet could act unilaterally, urging the government to grant Rs 1 million per family rather than waiting on parliamentary amendments. The delay contrasts sharply with state security organs: the Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have already pledged Rs 2.5 million and Rs 1 million respectively to the kin of fallen officers.
Corridor Economy Shattered
The disaster has paralyzed the Trishuli economic artery connecting Nepal with China. Beyond the human toll, the flood hit 13 hydropower projects and five solar plants totaling 759 megawatts of installed capacity, leaving roughly 900 project workers missing or unreachable. Cross-border commerce via the Rasuwagadhi crossing remains cut off, with business associations reporting scores of missing freight workers, 233 missing drivers and assistants, and more than 400 swept-away cargo containers.
Community infrastructure also took a severe blow. Official records indicate damage to 48 public buildings, 18 schools, seven health posts, and 30 cultural heritage sites. The Ministry of Education noted that 503 students and 28 teachers remain missing.
Mental Health Concerns Mount
As displaced communities struggle to rebuild, experts are also warning of an escalating mental health fallout. In broadcasts addressing the emotional aftermath, BBC News Nepali highlighted the challenge of regaining hope amid severe grief and displacement. Furthermore, psychiatrist Dr. Richa Amatya warned that repeated exposure to distressing flood footage on mobile phones and social media is triggering secondary trauma among the wider public, urging viewers to manage their media consumption to protect their psychological well-being.
