Birgunj Customs Office exceeds monthly revenue target for Ashoj
The Birgunj Customs Office collected Rs 26.73 billion in Ashoj, surpassing its monthly target due to increased festive demand for fuel and other goods.
The Birgunj Customs Office successfully surpassed its revenue collection target for the Nepali month of Ashoj, which spans from mid-September to mid-October. According to data provided by Chief Customs Administrator Krishna Prasad Mainali, the office collected Rs 26.73 billion during this period, exceeding its monthly goal of Rs 26.46 billion by 1.02 percent.
Reports from Ratopati and Onlinekhabar highlighted that the surge in revenue was driven largely by the import of essential commodities. Fuel imports emerged as the primary contributor, bringing in Rs 2.29 billion. This was followed by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports, which generated Rs 1.8 billion, and bitumen imports, which added Rs 1.4 billion to the total. Additionally, the import of fruits, specifically apples and pears, contributed Rs 500 million to the monthly revenue stream.
Officials attributed this positive performance to heightened economic activity associated with the festive season. The increased demand for goods during the period helped the office achieve its monthly objectives, as noted in reports by The Rising Nepal and My Republica.
Despite the strong performance in Ashoj, the customs office has not yet met its cumulative revenue target for the first quarter of the current fiscal year. Official figures indicate that by the end of the month, the office had collected a total of Rs 69.13 billion. This remains below the cumulative target of Rs 70.56 billion set for the first three months of the fiscal year.
While the monthly target was exceeded, the gap in the cumulative collection highlights the ongoing challenges in meeting broader fiscal revenue goals. The Birgunj Customs Office remains a critical node in Nepal's trade infrastructure, and its performance is closely monitored as a barometer for national economic health and import-related tax collection.
