Former PM Bhattarai warns of looming national crisis
Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai wrote on social media that political infighting, economic decline and institutional disorder are pushing Nepal toward a major crisis.
Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has warned that Nepal is heading toward a major crisis. In a social media post on Sunday, November 1, 2026, he pointed to a combination of political, economic and institutional problems that he says threaten the country's stability.
According to reports from Kharibot, Nagarik News and Onlinekhabar, Bhattarai cited growing geopolitical manoeuvring and intensifying infighting within both the ruling and opposition parties. He also wrote of disorder in key organs of the state, naming the judiciary, the administration and the police.
Beyond politics, he pointed to the continued decline of the economy and the growing burden of natural disasters. Onlinekhabar's English edition reported that he also listed the steady exodus of young Nepalis abroad and mounting frustration in the public communication sector and civil society as signs of the crisis.
Bhattarai said the country can no longer withstand instability and upheaval under any pretext. He urged everyone to take their responsibilities seriously in their own fields and to contribute positively or, failing that, to refrain from doing anything negative.
"If we can, let us make a positive contribution. If we cannot, let us refrain from doing anything negative," he wrote, as quoted by Onlinekhabar English.
