Food quality offices and district administrations in Kavrepalanchok, Banke and Kanchanpur have told sweet shops to display the ingredients, the oil or ghee used, expiry dates and prices, as demand for sweets rises ahead of Tihar and Chhath. The directives follow a notice from the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control that took effect on Wednesday, October 28, 2026 (Kartik 11), and officials cite the Food Hygiene and Quality Act, 2081.
In Kavrepalanchok, the office in Dhulikhel has also barred synthetic dyes and wrapping sweets in printed paper or newspaper. Officials in Banke and Kanchanpur have warned that shops that do not comply face legal action. Some shops in Nepalgunj have already begun labeling their products.
