Provincial education ministers, university officials and education experts are meeting in Hetauda for a two-day conference, organised by Bagmati University, on strengthening Nepal's higher education system and managing provincial universities. It began on October 29 and runs until October 30.
Opening it, Education and Sports Minister Sasmit Pokharel said new universities should be established only where student demand, market need and the case for state investment are shown, and that making existing universities effective matters more than adding new ones. He said the government is mapping universities and assessing schools' physical infrastructure to stop duplicate investment, that a mechanism now exists to coordinate federal and provincial universities, and that the conference's suggestions will feed into upcoming laws and policies, including the School Education Act now being drafted.
