Liverpool and Manchester City reached the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, both after penalty shoot-outs. Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Anfield, and holders Manchester City beat Brighton 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium.
At Anfield, Chelsea's Morgan Rogers and Liverpool's Cody Gakpo both scored first-half penalties. In the shoot-out, Giorgi Mamardashvili saved from Emmanuel Emegha and Wesley Fofana missed to send Liverpool through. A much-changed City side came from behind twice against Brighton, with goals from Mateo Kovacic and Vitor Reis, and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli then saved from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk.
In the quarter-finals Liverpool will face Bournemouth, Manchester City will play third-tier Bradford City and Crystal Palace will meet Sunderland. Everton, who beat Newcastle United 3-1 on Thursday, will play Fleetwood Town in December.
