Padam Bahadur Raya of Letang Municipality-5, Morang, whose family cremated a road accident victim as him in June, returned home alive on October 26, the full moon at the end of Dashain. Raya, who has a history of poor mental health, had been out of contact since Magh (January–February 2026). A pedestrian hit by a motorcycle on the Chatara-Pakali road in Sunsari on June 9 died at Birat Teaching Hospital the next day; Raya's mother identified the unclaimed body as her son's, and the family cremated it at the Chisang River on June 12. Raya has said he was in India.
The family had received Rs 550,000 in accident insurance, according to Setopati. Morang police say they will recover the money, correct the records to show the body as unclaimed, withdraw the identification documents and reopen the investigation into who the dead man was. His identity is still unknown.
