The 140-megawatt Tanahun Hydropower Project is advancing toward completion, with structural development and community support initiatives running in parallel. According to Project Chief Shyamji Bhandari, the powerhouse and related underground structures are approximately 80 percent complete. Managed by the Chinese firm SinoHydro Corporation, the project has finalized excavation for the underground powerhouse, tailrace tunnel, and cable tunnels, while concrete lining nears completion. Current efforts are focused on installing and testing essential electromechanical equipment, including generators, turbines, and transformers.
Beyond engineering, the project has begun clearing trees within the reservoir area, coordinating with 25 community forest user groups. Simultaneously, management is prioritizing livelihood restoration for affected households. To date, 776 individuals have participated in 38 skill development programs, ranging from electrical installation and tailoring to commercial goat farming. These initiatives, including a recent training session focused on financial literacy and livestock management, aim to transition local families from subsistence activities to sustainable, commercial production.
