Brazil Re-elects Lula as President Amid Political Turmoil
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been re-elected as president of Brazil, securing 51.8% of the vote in the October 25, 2026 runoff. The 80-year-old leader, who previously served as president from 2003 to 2010, defeated Senator Flávio Bolsonaro by approximately 4.4 million votes. Lula is scheduled to begin his fourth non-consecutive term on January 5, 2027. The electoral process faced significant friction, with Flávio Bolsonaro refusing to concede and calling for the results to be annulled, citing concerns over a Supreme Court decision to extend voting hours.
