Abhishek Sharma leads India to T20 series victory over New Zealand
India wrapped up their five-match T20 series against New Zealand with a commanding six-wicket win in Wellington, led by Abhishek Sharma's explosive century.
India secured a dominant six-wicket victory against New Zealand in the third T20 International in Wellington on Tuesday, clinching the five-match series with two games to spare. According to Al Jazeera, India successfully chased down a target of 199 runs in just 13.2 overs, fueled by an aggressive opening partnership.
Opening batter Abhishek Sharma delivered a standout performance, scoring 113 runs off 38 balls. Nagarik News reported that Sharma reached his century in just 35 balls, maintaining a strike rate of 297.36. His innings, which included 11 sixes and nine fours, was described by Indian captain Shreyas Iyer as exceptional, with Iyer noting that he had not previously witnessed a century scored within five overs at the international level, as cited by Al Jazeera.
Sharma was supported by young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who contributed 45 runs from 19 balls. The pair shared a 133-run partnership in 7.1 overs, which Al Jazeera characterized as one of the most destructive in the history of the format. Sooryavanshi was dismissed by Matthew Fisher, while Sharma eventually fell to a catch by Glenn Phillips off the bowling of Kyle Jamieson.
New Zealand, having been sent in to bat after losing the toss, posted a total of 198 for 3. Daryl Mitchell led the hosts' scoring with an unbeaten 89 off 52 balls, supported by Finn Allen’s 40 and Bevon Jacobs’ 39 not out. Al Jazeera noted that Mitchell effectively countered the seam movement provided by Indian bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh by moving around the crease.
The Indian chase saw contributions from Sanju Samson, who scored 18, while captain Shreyas Iyer added 5. Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir remained at the crease to guide the team to victory. New Zealand’s bowling attack struggled to contain the Indian batters; Nagarik News reported that Jacob Duffy conceded 44 runs in two overs, while Kyle Jamieson took two wickets for 45 runs in his 3.2-over spell.
This victory marks a significant milestone for the Indian side under Iyer's leadership, as they maintain an unbeaten record in the series. The teams are scheduled to meet again for the fourth T20I at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday.
