Big Movies upgrades Kamalpokhari multiplex with new technology
The Kathmandu-based multiplex has installed 4K laser projection, 64-channel Dolby Atmos sound, and new ergonomic seating as part of a major facility upgrade.
Big Movies, the multiplex located at City Centre in Kamalpokhari, has completed a comprehensive renovation of its cinema halls. The upgrades, which include new projection technology, sound systems, and seating, aim to align the facility with international standards, according to company chairman Rajendra Aryal.
During a press conference held on Tuesday, November 3, Aryal stated that the renovation was designed to improve the overall viewing experience, building on the company's history as one of the first modern multiplexes in Nepal. The project involved updating the interior environment, including new wall coverings, carpeting, and lighting systems, as reported by Setopati, Onlinekhabar, and Deshsanchar.
Technical enhancements
The cinema has installed the Barco SP4K-20C, a European-manufactured smart laser projector. According to reports from Onlinekhabar and Deshsanchar, the unit features 21,000 lumens of brightness and native 4K resolution (4096×2160). The company claims this technology provides superior image clarity and vividness. Additionally, the screens now support over 98.5 percent of Rec. 2020 and DCI-P3 colour spaces to ensure accurate colour reproduction.
For audio, the multiplex has transitioned to a 64-channel Dolby Atmos system. This 3D immersive setup uses a CP(5)A sound processor to manage up to 128 individual sound objects simultaneously. Setopati noted that this configuration provides an independent audio feed to each speaker, intended to create a more realistic soundscape, particularly for action-oriented films.
Seating and comfort
The renovation also addressed audience comfort through the installation of new seating arrangements. The hall now features 255 "Champion Series" chairs, which are 22 inches wide and include ergonomic support and a three-position locking mechanism. For a more premium experience, the facility has added 29 "Royal Luxuria" recliners, each measuring 29 inches in width. These details were consistent across reports from Setopati, Onlinekhabar, and Deshsanchar.
Big Movies continues to market its services under the slogan "Experience Cinema, Experience the Difference." With these upgrades, the management expressed confidence that the facility will offer a more immersive experience for moviegoers in Kathmandu.
