Everest Paper Mills workers receive long-overdue payments
The 174 workers of Everest Paper Mills have been paid Rs 63.66 million in wages and benefits they were owed, after a long legal and administrative fight.
The 174 workers of Everest Paper Mills Pvt Ltd have been paid the wages and employment benefits they were owed, after a long legal and administrative fight, according to the labour ministry.
The payments, made by several cheques on October 16, came to Rs 63,662,803.38 in all, the ministry said. They followed a Labour Court order and an agreement reached at the District Administration Office in Dhanusha. The workers had gone to court to claim their dues after a dispute with the mill's management, Kathmandupati and Nagarik reported.
A long road to payment
On March 31, 2026, the Labour Court ordered the company's bank accounts released so that Rs 58.66 million could be paid to the workers. The accounts were unfrozen, but the company still did not pay, and the workers filed a fresh petition alleging contempt of court.
With the order still not carried out, the bank accounts, assets and shares of the company's shareholders were frozen again on September 11, Onlinekhabar reported.
The settlement
The total paid covers the Rs 58.66 million the court had ordered, along with the workers' salaries for the Nepali months of Bhadra and Asoj (mid-August to mid-October).
The ministry said the payments had at last put the long-delayed agreement and the Labour Court's decision fully into effect.
