The Ministry of Education and Sports has formed a five-member study and monitoring committee to look into duplicated student records in the Integrated Educational Management Information System (IEMIS). An informal study found more than 200,000 student entries repeated in the system, and the ministry said the double entries may have been used to misuse state funds meant for grants, scholarships, school meals, uniforms and textbooks. Minister Sasmit Pokharel said the matter would be looked into further and that those at fault would face action.
The committee, formed by ministerial decision on Thursday, November 5, 2026 (Kartik 19, 2083 BS) and coordinated by Joint Secretary Shivakumar Sapkota, is to study whether the duplication comes from a technical weakness or deliberate misconduct. It is also to recommend the strongest action against any schools, managers or other responsible persons who submitted false data. The ministry said it aims to remove the duplicate and fake entries so that the system is transparent, secure and based on real figures. The reports do not say how many entries are fake or whether any money has actually been lost.
